West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared on social media a replica of a letter she despatched to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 11 advocating for Bengali to be given classical language standing. She expressed satisfaction at receiving the long-awaited recognition after many “deprivations.”
“It is a copy of the letter I wrote to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India (dated January 11, 2024) wherein I expressed our demand for recognition of Bengali as a classical language by the Central Authorities. In response, BJP chief Amit Malviya accused Banerjee of taking credit score, saying she didn’t push for recognition throughout her time as an ally within the UPA authorities and in her early years as chief minister.
Malviya highlighted that whereas different languages equivalent to Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odiya gained classical language standing between 2004 and 2014, Bengali didn’t .
